Hamas: Palestinian reconciliation essential to counter Judaisation of Jerusalem

Hamas yesterday said Palestinian reconciliation and the achievement of full national unity are necessary responses to Israel’s Judaisation of Jerusalem and aggression against Al-Aqsa Mosque.

In a statement to mark the 17th anniversary of the Second Intifada, the movement said: “The Al-Aqsa Intifada proved the failure of the settlement process”, in reference to the Oslo agreement signed between Israel and the PLO.

“Israel only understands the language of force, which confirms the validity of the serious approach to building a comprehensive national project,” the statement said, adding that “the resistance is a strategic option for the Palestinian people, and a legitimate right in the face of the occupation, and will continue until the achievement of its objectives in full.”

The Second Intifada broke out on 28 September 2000 one day after the late Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon stormed the Muslim holy site under heavy armed guards.

The intifada, which lasted for five years, started in Jerusalem before it spread to the rest of the Palestinian cities in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. As many as 4,412 Palestinians were killed and nearly 48,322 others were wounded during the five years, while 1,069 Israelis were killed and 4,500 others were injured.
